2010 Indianapolis Red Bull MotoGP | The Indy Scene!

To say the streets of Indianapolis were alive during the 2010 Red Bull MotoGP would be a true understatement. Never before have I witnessed such a variety of motorcyclist and motorcycles from hard core enthusiast to the casual observer.  You might expect to see a massive number of sport bikes filling the streets given the nature of the race at hand, but owners of custom choppers, cruisers, supermotos and tourers also gravitated to Indy by the thousands to check out the industry’s premier racing event with USA’s own Colin Edwards, Ben Spies and Nicky Hayden holding it down the States.

Saturday’s qualifying proved exciting with Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Ben Spies earning his first ever pole position, with Nicky Hayden locking in position 3 while nine-time GP champion Valentino “The Doctor” Rossi had a difficult day with an untimely crash towards the end of the qualifying session. Even with this loss of time The Doctor still earned a respectable 7th position for Sunday’s final starting grid. Once the qualifying festivities were done, it was time for the night life to begin and oh what a night.

As mentioned earlier, this is truly one bike event that is inclusive to all genders, races and bikes.  I’ve been to a number of bike events throughout the country, but never before have I seen such the variety of bikes and people as I did the Indy MotoGP. As long as you ride, you fit in.  Not far off the main strip where thousands gathered was yet another gathering of bikes. Here I found bikes from some of the meanest sport bikes rolling the streets of Indy from Fancy Cycle Customs and Brocks stretched BMW S 1000 RR. Helping to bring the night to life was the ICON Street Scene Fashion and Stunt. This was no ordinary fashion show.  ICON enlisted the skills of Jason Britton and Eric Honenshell along with the lovely ICON fashion models as well as XDL champions Nick Apex and Ernie Vigil.  I knew this was going to be different when the models rode onto the stage with their guest stunt rider, who immediately stunted their way off the set after dropping off their lovely model.  Talk about making an entrance and exit.  This technique also eliminated transition down time and kept the crowd amped from beginning to end.  “The ICON Street Scene, for a first time event, goes in the 'win' column. It hit on all cylinders. An awesome blend of fashion, music and performance” says ICON and Team No Limit hype man Allan Lane aka Stunt Mouth.

Another element to the Indy MotoGP is the Yamaha/Boz Brothers Custom Bike show.  This year Krystos Efantis of MSP Motorsports Performance took home the best Amateur build category with an insanely built Yamaha R1 and Tony Sesto of Sesto Custom Cycles winning the pro category.  Oh yeah, let not forget the main reason to be there, the race.  Congrats to Ben Spies of USA Monster Yamaha for his first podium placement after Saturday’s qualifying and his 2nd place win behind Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa. A world renowned race combined with an incredible street scene and night life.  What more could you ask for?
